Warangal: An electric car designed by students of the KITS Warangal has won two prizes in national-level competition ‘Effi-car-2016’ held recently at University Institute of Engineering and Technology College, Punjab University.

Kakatiya Institute of Technology and Science Warangal mechanical engineering students, calling themselves ‘Team Ratham’, designed and fabricated the car. It secured third prize in overall competition winning a cash prize of Rs 50, 000 and stood at second place in highway run test (Race) wining cash prize of Rs 15,000.

Team Ratham consists of ten students K Vikram patel (captain), P Sairam Koushik (vice-captain), M Arun prakash, K Praveen Kumar, P Jaya Krishna, B Sunil Kumar, P Sri Niketh, A Uma Maheshwar, G Vinod and M Parushuram of third year mechanical engineering.

They were guided by Assistant Professor of mechanical engineering department Ch Karunakar. At a programme at the college on Monday, KITSW Secretary and Correspondent V Lakshmikantha Rao congratulated the students and the faculty for their efforts in bringing accolades to the institute at national level. The institute would support students who would come up with innovative ideas, he said.

KITSW Director Y Manohar, its Principal Prof K Gururaj, mechanical engineering department head Prof K Eshwaraiah and PRO D Prabhakara Chary also expressed pleasure over the success of the students. Manohar explaining the features of the car said the vehicle runs solely on motor and battery and helps protecting environment by reducing pollution which has become a major problem in the world.

‘The battery is reversible which means it supplies the energy and receives the energy. If the battery is charged six hours duration, it works for 2.5 hours and one could travel a distance of 40 to 45 kilometres using the car,’ he added. Principal Prof Gururaj said that the car would be the future modal of automobiles industry. In future automobiles would be only battery operated vehicles as whole world was concerned with pollution.
