Warangal: Senior civil judge and District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) Secretary G Neelima exhorted the women to increase their awareness about laws enacted for their protection. She said with an objective to prevent and control offences against women many laws were in force. The women have to know about the laws that deal with sex determination, dowry harassment, Nirbhaya Act and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO).

The judge addressed a gathering at legal awareness camp on ‘Women Laws’ organised by the Centre for Women’s Studies of Kakatiya University on Wednesday in the senate hall on the campus. Educated women should learn about the laws to create awareness among the common people, she noted.

Referring to the growing incidents of suicide she said, B Arch student M Rishiteshwari, who died under mysterious conditions recently at Nagarjuna University, would have not committed suicide if she was fully aware of the anti-ragging laws and how to make use of them. Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crimes) K Eswara Rao said there were ten SHE teams effectively functioning in Warangal city in four divisions. The SHE teams were covering 54 areas and so far 270 eve teasing cases were booked.

He exhorted the girls and women not to be reluctant in reporting eve teasing incidents while expressing serious concern over involvement of juveniles committing eve teasing. Efforts were being made to change their attitude through counselling. Jagruthi Kala Brundam presented songs and skits on the subject. Two short films screened on the occasion.

The University College Principal Prof N Rama Swamy, Centre for Women’s Studies Director G Shamitha, DLSA member Kamala Manohar Rao, professors VVN Sharma, T Ravinder Reddy, Swaroopa Rani and others were present.
