Farmer reaps 40 quintals of turmeric per acre

Adilabad: Ajay Yadav of Donara village in Thamsi mandal is confident of producing 40-45 quintals of turmeric per acre, as against that of 30 quintals last year by adopting modern bed method, thus proving to be an ideal role model for other farmers. His system of production is attracting the attention of other farmers, like those of Ankapur, who visited his farm last Tuesday. It may be recalled that Ankapur is famous for turmeric production.

Yadav had previously cultivated cotton in 20 acres and incurred huge losses because of high investments. He initially started cultivating turmeric on his two acres of land and later, increased the area of cultivation to five acres. Along with the modern bed method, he used organic fertiliser, spending Rs 50,000 on each acre.

Speaking to The Hans India, he shared the secret of his success and methods he used like bed method and drip irrigation. Taking advantage of his modern crop practices, farmers who have been him collected samples of turmeric seed for their use. His neighbouring farmers were surprised by his success story. They are placed orders in advance for the sample seeds, which are in great demand.

There is an unending stream of farmers visiting his field from Nizamabad, Nirmal, Velpur and also from Karimnagar district. Those from Nizamabad say that they have not been able to produce more than 25 quintals of turmeric. They are clearly surprised by Yadav’s yield of 40 quintals. His field has become a centre of attraction.

Even the officials of the Agriculture Department are advising farmers to visit Ajay’s land to acquaint themselves about the latest technologies for successful farming operations. The visiting farmers sounded confident after learning about Yadav’s success they too could emulate his good example. Taking Yadav as a model, 30 farmers of Danora village have taken up turmeric cultivation and were reportedly earning higher profits.
