Khammam: At the height of separate Telangana Movement, when the TRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) launched a fast-unto-death stir in Khammam sub-jail on November 29, 2009, after he was arrested and remanded to 14 days, daring the police batons the CPI (ML-New Democracy) leaders and cadres staged protests condemning his arrest.

New Democracy was the only political party in the district that came out openly in support of separate State movement in the district where the TRS’ presence was minimal in those days. Not just at that point of time but also later, the support extended by the New Democracy in taking the agitation forward was unparallel.

The public meeting ‘Poru Garjana’ that held here in 2011 heralded that TRS is not alone, but New Democracy was also there to champion the separate statehood agitation. Despite arrests and hurdles, the New Democracy cadres went to Hyderabad to participate in the ‘Million March’ called by pro-Telangana groups.

In all, New Democracy cadres sent a strong message to people in the region that there was no dearth of support for Telangana Movement in Khammam district. Even recently, it was alleged that New Democracy indirectly supported the ruling TRS in the recently held election for MLC seat from the Local Body Constituency.

It may be mentioned here that New Democracy withdrew its support to Congress nominee Puvvada Nageswara Rao when the other Left Parties supported. Speaking at a public meeting here on Tuesday, KCR came down heavily on PDSU activists, a subsidiary wing of New Democracy, stating that that the students wing had behaved cheaply by obstructing his convoy.

He also criticised the New Democracy party. On Monday, the PDSU activists staged a road blockade demanding the release of pending scholarships and fee reimbursement. New Democracy district secretary Potu Ranga Rao told The Hans India “It was our cadres who supported TRS chief when he was arrested and put in jail in 2009. He then heaped praise on our party for supporting the Telangana cause. Now we have become a bitter enemy for KCR for raising people’s problems.”
