Hyderabad: The two-judge bench of the High Court at Hyderabad comprising Acting Chief Justice Dilip B Bhosale and Justice P Naveen Rao on Thursday directed the police authorities to hand over the bodies of the victims of the alleged Maoists encounter in forest Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh on March 1, to family members after taking due acknowledgement from them The bench also required the local police to take videograph of the process of handing over the bodies.

As reported earlier the bench is dealing with a petition by Professor G Laxman, president of Civil Liberties Committee seeking to declare the killing of 8 Maoists including three women by para military forces during a joint combing operation as illegal and in violation of Article 14 and 21 of the Constitution.

V Raghunath, counsel for the petitioner pointed out to the bench that the bodies of eight Maoists were kept in Bhadrachalam government hospital where there were no facilities to preserve the bodies for a long time. He urged the court to shift the bodies to Osmania hospital in Hyderabad.

Additional advocate general of Telangana J. Ramachandra Rao said that there was no need of shifting the bodies to the city as the police have already made arrangement to preserve the bodies and post mortem was also conducted as per the guidelines of the National Human Rights Commission.

He further informed the court that there was pressure on the government from family members for taking over the bodies of the victims. While adjourning the hearing, the bench said that as the encounter has taken place in Chhattisgarh it would have been proper for the petitioner to move the High Court of Chhattisgarh.
