Fate of 182 model schools in Telangana uncertain
The fate of 182 Model Schools in Telangana is thrown into uncertainty as the State government is yet to arrive at a firm decision on the proposed merger of the schools with education department. There are an estimated one lakh students studying in the schools, who are being taught by about 3,800 teachers and principals.

A state-wide protest staged by them seeking interim relief, dearness allowance, Telangana increment and seeking merger of schools with the department and their demand has not yielded any result so far. This has been making Model School teachers and students worried about their future.
It might be noted that the Centre has abandoned model schools project and the State government has not initiated any measures to merge it with education department. In view of the proposal to upgrade Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalayas (KGBVs) to intermediate level, the principals of Models Schools are suggesting that the entire SSC batch of KGBVs could be merged with Model Schools as all girls’ hostels in the schools would begin to function from June-2016.
Further, the present strength of 20 students in each group of MPC, BPC, CEC and MEC as per GO 17 could be raised to 40 per group as per BIE norms as adequate teaching staff is present. Similarly the current strength of 40 per section in 6 to 10 class could be increased to 50 per class per section.
‘There is a demand from parents in the State to provide boys hostel for model schools as majority of boys in 9, 10 and inter are staying in SC ST and BC hostels. One of these hostels should be brought under the supervision of the concerned model school principals,’ opined Telangana Model School Principals Association adviser Srikanth Devulapalli.
All these issues are pending for the CM’s decision. However, it was learnt that the issue of model schools was not taken during a recent meeting of the CM with Principal Secretary and the Director of School Education, he said. In the wake of ensuing budget, the Commissioner and Director of School Education reportedly proposed Rs 490 crore for Model Schools of which around Rs 292.5 crore goes towards the salaries of teaching and non teaching staff.
But there is no clarity on PRC component in the proposal. On the other hand, the CM is yet to endorse implementation of PRC for the teachers. A meeting is scheduled in the first week of March with the heads of education department to discuss the issue.
