Nizamabad: Sugarcane growers in Nizamabad district are badly hit with the closure of Nizam Sugar Factory (NSF) at Bodhan and Nizam Cooperative Sugar Factory at Sarangapur. They even fear that the sugarcane crop would gradually disappear from the district, which is called as the sugar bowl Telangana State. The area under cultivation of the sugar cane crop has been falling with each passing day.

Moreover, the farmers of Bodhan and Nizamabad areas are not in position to produce sugar cane due to the absence of government support, Earlier, sugar cane crop used to be cultivated in nearly 3 to 3.5 lakh acres and produce around 9 lakh to 10.5 lakh tonnes of sugarcane on an average every year.

But unfortunately, the crop was sown only in 10,000 acres of land with resulted in the yield of 30,000 tonnes of sugar. It is very meagre when compared to the earlier sowing area and less than 3 percent to pervious sowing area. Although the government is not encouraging the production of the sugarcane crop, a private company Gayatri Sugar Factory is successfully producing large quantities of sugar and it also has two branches at Sadasivanagar and Maghi village in the district.

Every year, the Bodhan sugar factory used to take steps to cultivate sugarcane in 1000 to 1500 acres of land producing nearly 30,000 to 45,000 tonnes of sugarcane. But this year, the factory sowed the cane crop in only 30 acres of land, which is considered to be the lowest the history of the Nizam Sugar Factory.

While the government owned sugar factories were shut down due to the indifference of the successive State governments, the Gayatri Sugars, a private company was encouraging the farmers to cultivate the crop in Kamareddy and Nizamsagar areas. They were able to produce around 2.5 lakh tonnes of sugarcane on an average during the year, 2015-16.

Speaking to The Hans India on Friday,Srinivas Reddy, the Nizamabad district sugarcane farmers association president said that the successive State governments had completely neglected the NSF and NCSF factories, forcing their shutdown. Even the farmers were discouraged from cultivating the crop.

Reddy demanded the government to immediately reopen the NSF and NCSF factories in Nizamabad district and encourage the sugar cane farmers to cultivate the crop. This way, they could prevent the withering away of the sugarcane crop the district.
