GHMC gets 291.57 cr for waste management overhaul

Hyderabad: For strengthening door to door collection, transportation and segregation of waste, the government has come up with Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) in GHMC area. The State government will be procuring vehicles and make infrastructural arrangements with an estimated cost of Rs 291.57 crore. It has submitted the report to Centre for consideration under Swachh Bharat Mission for providing 20 per cent of the project cost.
Replying during question hour in Legislative Council, Minister for Municipal Administration K Taraka Rama Rao said the old dumper trucks would be replaced gradually in a phased manner. He said that there were 180 vehicles with the GHMC, which are more than 15 years old and would be replaced by the new ones. 90 (25-ton tippers) and 60 (10-ton tippers) were required for lifting 4000 MT of garbage every day.
Currently, GHMC is having 41 (25-ton tippers) and 54 (10-ton tippers), while the balance of the vehicles is being procured on hire basis. The fund required is being met from GHMC budget. Apart from this, GHMC has already ordered for procurement of 18 big sweeping machines under BOO (Buy, Operate and Own) mechanism for effective cleaning on main roads. GHMC also invited tenders for disposal of construction and demolition waste for which it has finalised an agency.
For strengthening the segregation of dry and wet waste, the Minister said massive sanitation programme was taken up in GHMC limits for collection of MSW from household level by supplying two (12 litres) plastic garbage bins. Swachh auto tippers on the driver-cum-owner (DCO) scheme have been provided for the collection of dry and wet garbage from households to transfer station.
Establishment of 13 new mechanised transfer stations have been provided in addition to 12 of existing transfer stations, he added. Minister informed that the Deputy Commissioner in 24 circles have been asked to be present on ground at 5 am for ensuring garbage waste is cleared in their jurisdiction. He assured that the GHMC would complete the desilting works of storm water drains by June end, before the arrival of monsoon.
