Hyderabad: As part of making Telangana the ‘seed bowl’ of India, the government will be doubling the produce of certified seed of different crop varieties from current four lakh quintals to eight lakh quintals in 2016-17. Replying during the question hour in Legislative Council, Minister for Agriculture Pocharam Srinivas Reddy said that the government was making all out effort to produce and supply the certified seed of new varieties of various crops in identified villages.

He said that 45,875 farmers were being encouraged to produce seeds in 18,350 acres of land across 1,830 villages as part of 'seed village' programme. “It will be strengthening breeder seed, foundation seed and certified seed. As part of strengthening of the existing infrastructure facilities such as seed storage godowns, processing units and testing facilities are being developed. It is planning to produce seeds only through seed growing farmers avoiding middle men.”

In this endeavour, the Minister said that Prof Jayshankar Telangana State Agriculture University (PJTSAU), Agriculture Department, and other relevant government agencies would be coordinated with for faster adoption of technologies and to strengthen the seed chain.

While on the other hand, Telangana Seed Certification Agency has been strengthened by increasing the seed certification staff. “We are organising training and awareness programme to the seed growing farmers under the seed village programme on quality seed production,” said Srinivas Rao.
