Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma on Friday instructed the District Collectors to speed up the construction of toilets allotted in the villages for achieving the status of ‘open defecation-free’ state at the earliest.

The Chief Secretary, along with Secretary of Drinking Water and Sanitation Ministry, Parameswaran Iyer, held a video conference with officials and reviewed the progress of construction of toilets under Swachh Bharat Mission.

He asked the officials to create awareness on the need for regular usage of toilets by involving local people representatives, NGOs and students.
After Siddipet achieved open defecation-free status, the CS said, Medak, Gajwel, Pedapalli and Huzurabad have been included in the list for achieving open defecation-free status.

Iyer said only 10 of 650 districts in the country have been declared open defecation-free districts. He exhorted the officials to make efforts to include at least one district from Telangana in the open defecation-free category this year.
