Opposition seeks a separate debate on recent issues related to student leaders

Hyderabad: The Telangana Assembly witnessed a pandemonium on Saturday as all Opposition parties demanded a debate on the recent incidents where students were beaten up at University of Hyderabad (UoH) when JNU student leader Kanhaiah went to the university and the students’ unrest at Osmania University where a Congress MLA’s car was damaged in stone pelting.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s plea to raise the issue during discussion on demands for grants on Home Department instead of a special discussion on the subject went unheeded. The Opposition insisted that the House discuss the issue separately. Even the MIM wanted a separate discussion on the subject. As the Opposition refused to budge, Deputy Speaker Padma Devender Reddy adjourned the House for 10 minutes.

There was no change in the mood of the House even when it reassembled and then the House had to be adjourned two more times. The Deputy Speaker also postponed the Question Hour.It all began when the Congress members, sporting black scarves, walked into the podium and demanded that their adjournment motion be taken up for discussion.

As the chair did not agree for it, the Congress and the MIM legislators rushed into the well. The TDP also joined the Opposition Congress when the Assembly resumed at 11.10 am. Opposition leader K Jana Reddy took strong objection for not accepting their demand for special discussion on university affairs. Since the issue was related to social justice and the universities, he reiterated his demand for a debate. MIM MLA Ahmed Balala also insisted a separate debate on the issue.

When MIM Floor leader Akbaruddin Owaisi pointed out that the issue could not be linked with the discussion on demands, Chandrashekar Rao intervened and urged the Opposition to speak on the issue during discussion on demands. Finally, the government agreed for a special debate on the issue.
