Hyderabad: The Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) on Sunday decided to play the role of watchdog without any political affiliation and adopt a constructive approach to people's problems.

Addressing a press conference here after a meeting of the steering committee, chairman M Kodandaram said the JAC had discussed about the future course of action. “We have decided to struggle in support of people’s aspirations with special emphasis on democracy and social justice, and adopt a people-centric approach for the development of Telangana,” said Kodandaram.

The JAC chairman said that most of the participants had opined that JAC should continue to play a constructive role. He said that the steering committee had discussed the services rendered by organisations, which had actively taken part in the Telangana agitation, along with them who are no more associated with them.

Stating that every organisation had the freedom to choose their path in democracy, he said that JAC would strive to find solutions for their issues in the future. "The JAC will continue to work hard as it had earlier," he said. Kodandaram said that the JAC would continue to be a civil society group without any political affiliation. However, he said that they would accept issue-based support from political parties.

The JAC chairman also condemned the arrest of assistant professor Tathagata Sen Gupta and alleged that police had deliberately attacked the students, who were holding peaceful demonstrations. Kodandaram said that the JAC would soon hold its extended committee meeting to chalk out the future course of action. He said that the JAC had visited Ranga Reddy, Nalgonda and Karimnagar to assess the drought situation.

He said that they would submit a memorandum to the respective district collectors on their findings. He welcomed the discussion on drought to be taken up in Assembly and said that JAC would hand over their findings to MLAs taking part in the debate. The JAC would visit Adilabad on April 5 and 6 and Nizamabad on April 11.

Welcoming the move of TSPSC to postpone the Group-II examination, the JAC chairman said that the government should have at least 2,000 posts in the examination. He also wanted the government to fill up teacher posts and provide age relaxation in all posts, especially of excise constables. Replying to a question on the Pranahita project, Kodandaram said that the JAC would first examine the project and then make a comment.
