190 villages within Outer Ring Road to be covered by HMWSSB
Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K Taraka Rama Rao on Monday informed members of Legislative Council that in all 190 villages existing within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and outside the GHMC limits would be brought under the jurisdiction of HMWSSB (Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board) for ensuring unhindered drinking water supply.

The villages outside ORR and within the HMDA limits would be covered under Mission Bhagiratha, he said. Replying during the Question Hour, KTR said with the increase in demand for water supply in the city, the HMWSSB had been taking up projects from the river Krishna and the river Godavari and completed Krishna Phase-I, Phase-II, Phase-III and Godavari Phase-I schemes.
For meeting the increased demand due to rapid urbanisation, the government had directed HMWSSB to formulate proposals for creation of two new storage reservoirs. With 20 tmcft capacity each at Keshavapuram in Rangareddy district under Godavari source and at Devalamma Nagaram near Malkapur village in Nalgonda district under Krishna source, the government aimed to meet the demand.
“Since all other sources providing drinking water to the city are depleted, the government has taken up the issue seriously. The Chief Minister is reviewing the development twice every week,” he said. The Minister said that Godavari Phase-I had been commissioned in November 2015.
Currently, 86 mgd of water was being supplied from Godavari Phase-I (Moulana Abul Kalam Azad Sujala Sravanthi Scheme) and additional 86 mgd had been proposed for drawls under this scheme, which totalled to 172 mgd, he said. “With Mission Bhagiratha and Godavari Phase-I, the city would be self-sustainable in terms of drinking water supply,” he added.
KTR said the government was spending Rs 19 crore to provide water to 12 GHMC divisions on the outskirts of the City. He said that about 30 lakh population living in these divisions would be provided with unhindered water supply with the help of HUDCO funding.
