Congress member J Geeta Reddy raised the issue of rising incidents of chain-snatching in the city and wanted the minister to spell out steps taken by the police to prevent them. Claiming that chain-snatching incidents had come down in recent times, the minister said that during 2013 there were 700 snatching incidents, in 2014 it was 525 and 275 in 2015.
Besides disclosing that the crime rate had reduced by 14 per cent in the State, the minister said that there were 204 She Teams presently active and 315 persons were booked, 1,375 petty cases were registered and 1,725 eve-teasers were arrested. He further added that counseling was taken up for about 2,400.
The Minister claimed that the government has been advertising to create awareness against eve-teasing on television, FM Radio and in newspapers. Partitions have been in use in the RTC buses for safety of women. Initiatives like Dial 100 and Hawk eye mobile app, launched for this purpose, have been well received by public; he informed.
He also said that people appreciate the She Teams and want the same to be increased. He informed that there are 160 She Teams in operation presently in Hyderabad and 44 in Cyberabad. They are placed at bus stops, railway stations, colleges, women’s hostel, shopping malls, cinema halls, theatre halls, etc. “The team members act like students and keep an eye on eve-teasers by taking a video.
The video is shown to the eve-teasers, who first raise their voice; but once they see the video they become normal,” said the minister. He also informed that the government would increase She Teams in the districts. The number of She Teams in districts includes Hyderabad-100, Cyberabad-60, Adilabad-4, Karimnagar-6, Warangal-2, Khammam-7, Mahabubnagar-6, Nalgonda-6, Rangareddy-3, Medak-8 and Nizamabad-2.
Earlier, Geeta Reddy alleged that no recovery was being made in chain snatching cases. Pointing out that woman constitutes 50 per cent of the total population, she stressed the need for taking stringent measures to check crime against women.
