Municipal administration minister KT Rama Rao on Monday stated that HMW&SSB have taken up augmentation projects with Krishna and Godavari rivers to meet the increased demand for water in Hyderabad.

Asserting that the government's goal is to make Hyderabad a water surplus city, KTR said that the government has directed the Water Board to construct two new reservoirs with a storage capacity of 20 tmc ft each - one at Keshapuram village in Ranga Reddy district with Godavari as the source and the second one at Devalamma Nagaram, close to Malkapur village in Nalgonda district with Krishna as the source.

The Minister also said that the government is planning to provide drinking water to 190 villages around Hyderabad at a cost of Rs 1,900 crore. Pointing out at the drying up of the Osmansagar, Himayatsagar, Singur and Manjira, KTR said that the government is taking in alternative sources like Krishna and Godavari to overcome the water crisis.
