Pinapaka (Khammam): The Pollution Control Board is holding a public hearing at Veerapuram of the district at 10 am on Tuesday to seek people’s opinion to check irregularities of sand mafia. The public hearing has been convened as rules stipulate that it is mandatory if the sand reaches extend over 28 hectares and also because of the tribals objecting to sand quarrying at Duginepalli.

Once a unanimous decision is arrived at the public hearing, sand quarrying and sales will be conducted by the Telangana Mining Development Corporation. The State government established sand reaches for quarrying sand along the course of Godavari River in the Agency areas.

These reaches are located at Subbampeta of Charla mandal (2.25 lakh cubic meters), Kondaigudem in Manuguru mandal (2.25 lakh cubic meters) and Anantaram in Manuguru mandal (1.35 lakh cubic meters). In fact, grama sabhas should be held to transport sand from river banks and sand reaches should be set up as per the Panchayats (Extension to Scheduled Areas) Act. Since no permission was given to set up sand ramps, there was shortage of sand. Perpetrators of irregularities are exploiting the situation.
