Warangal development stuck in limbo
Even as the government trumpets that it would catapult Warangal as the most sought-after destination in the State after Hyderabad, the city’s master plan, christened as Vision-2031, prepared some three years ago is reportedly gathering dust in the Secretariat. With the government failing to give approval for the master plan, the development of the city came to a standstill.

It’s been over four decades since the last master plan came into existence. Notwithstanding the guidelines that suggest introducing a new master plan after every 15 years, the successive governments failed to do so.

Notwithstanding the guidelines that suggest introducing a new master plan after every 15 years, the successive governments failed to do so. Keeping in view growth and needs of the tri-cities of Warangal-Hanamkonda-Kazipet and adjacent 144 villages, a draft plan was prepared by the Kakatiya Urban Development Authority (KUDA) in 2013 inviting opinions and suggestions from the people.
The viewpoint of the draft plan was mainly to address the shortage of roads in proportion to growing number of vehicles, and the drainage system that became obsolete. Finally, the draft which was notified and approved by the KUDA Board in January 2014 was sent to the then Congress government.
Later, Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao instructed the administration to conduct a survey of 73-kilometre-long outer ring road (ORR). He also suggested five multi-level bridges on the ORR besides widening of the existing roads around the city. Meanwhile, with the government failing to approve the master plan, the Greater Warangal Municipal Corporation authority is reportedly facing difficulty in clearing the scores of applications under land regularisation scheme (LRS).
This apart, the authorities are in dilemma over taking up several civic works in the absence of master plan. Speaking to The Hans India, KUDA planning officer E Ajith Reddy said: “The draft plan is in circulation for the government’s approval.” When asked about the draft plan whether it would comply with the specifications of the ‘Smart City’ norms as Warangal is a strong contender to get included in the second list of the Central government’s plan, Reddy said, “It is one of the best models in the country and adheres to the Smart City norms.”
It’s learnt that the draft plan, which was pending with the Chief Minister’s peshi earlier, is waiting for the nod of IT Minister K Taraka Rama Rao who recently took over the portfolio of Municipal Administration and Urban Development from his father. Warangal Mayor Nannapuneni Narender said: “The civic body is doing its best to get government's nod for the draft plan."
