  • Alarming rise in dog population in Palamuru
  • 52 bitten by dogs in Nagarkurnool
  • Civic body urged to ensure road users’ safety

Packs of stray dogs roaming freely are common sights in every nook and corner of the town. The dog menace is quite high in Teachers Colony, Venkateswara Colony, Marlu, Mettugadda, Mothi Nagar, Old Palamuru and Srinivasa Colony. Pedestrians, cyclists and two-wheeler riders are more prone to stray dog attacks. Most of the victims are children and women.

Fearing stray dog attacks, many parents are hesitating to send their children out even during holidays. According to residents of Nalanda Auto Stand area, there is an alarming rise in stray dog population in the town in recent times. They complained that the municipality had failed to initiate any concrete measure to curb stray dog menace despite several representations to the authorities.

Government hospitals and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) are not adequately equipped to treat dog bite cases. There is also a shortage of anti-rabies vaccine in many hospitals and PHCs. Poor people who cannot afford to take their children to private hospitals for treatment, are approaching quacks who claim to have miracle cure for dog bite cases.

Though the medical and health authorities launched a campaign to discourage the parents from approaching quacks, the cost factor of anti-rabies vaccine and lack of adequate vaccine stocks in government hospitals proved to be major deterrents to social awakening. Keeping in view the panic situation, the municipal authorities need to ensure the safety of road users and people of vulnerable colonies by curbing the stray dog menace.
