Hyderabad: At an age when gender equality and woman empowerment are on top of the agenda of most governments, social taboos continue to happen even in urban areas, including Hyderabad. Schemes aimed at protecting the girl-child and putting an end to child marriages while exhorting the virtues of education, seem to be falling on deaf ears.

One such strange instance came to light when a15-year-old girl was stopped from writing her SSC Social Studies paper-I examination on Saturday, by none other than her father. The reason was preposterous-the parents had fixed Sunday for the minor’s engagement. Coming to know of this impending end to her academic aspirations, the girl sent a message to State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) regarding her engagement on Sunday and wedding on Monday.

Officials from SCPCR and Ranga Reddy Collectorate swung into action and stopped her engagement ceremony. The incident happened in Brahmanpally (Village) Hayathnagar mandal of Ranga Reddy district.Speaking to The Hans India, the teenager lamented that her father, a confirmed drunkard, did not wish bear any responsibility towards her and hence wanted her to get married off at the earliest.

This have reached such a sorry plight, that she no longer wants to stay with her parents and prefers to shift to a home for children, so that she can pursue her studies. “I am very good at academics. I score around 80 per cent marks at every examination. I am not interested in getting married. I dream of becoming a teacher. I am praying for a ‘Good Samaritan’ to come knocking and bail me out of this tricky situation,” she points out in choked tone that is barely audible.

SCPCR member, Achyuta Rao said that the ‘victim’ had sent him a message regarding her marriage. “When we counselled her parents, they said that they don’t have much money. However, I was aghast when I heard that they agreed to give a bike, cash and gold as dowry to the 23-year-old boy,” he added.

Ranga Reddy Collector, M Raghunandan Rao promised her parents that they would be given a house of their own. Meanwhile, the District child protection officer who was supposed to be present at the incident did not turn up.
