Palamur farmers to fight for justice
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) is planning to organise a ‘dharna’ in front of the District Collectorate on April 11 to protest against the government’s lackadaisical attitude in protecting the distressed farmers in Mahbubnagar.
CPM to hold a dharna on April 11 to protest against the delay in getting drought relief
Mahbubnagar: The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) is planning to organise a ‘dharna’ in front of the District Collectorate on April 11 to protest against the government’s lackadaisical attitude in protecting the distressed farmers in Mahbubnagar.
While listening to the farmers’ plights at the Vegetable Market in Kalwakurthy, CPM State unit secretary Tammineni Veerabhadram demanded that the State government immediately take up drought relief measures and complete all pending irrigation projects to protect the distressed farmers in the district.
Pouring in their plight, the farmers said they were facing a lot of hardships during this summer. Lack of drinking water, scarcity of fodder and growing debts had forced them to sell their cattle to slaughter houses, they said. “We have not got any relief from the government; particularly the farmers in Kalwakurthy are facing severe drought conditions with no drinking water, no work under MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural employment Guarantee Act) and no fodder for cattle.
We want the government to immediately take measures to protect the farming community. With lack of fodder and water, the demand for cattle has also gone down manifolds. The middlemen and cattle market contractors are acting hand in glove and fleecing more money from cattle sellers in the markets,” said Kethavath Anju Naik, a farmer from kalwakurthy.
Upon hearing this, the CPM secretary said their party was planning to organise a ‘dharna’ on April 11 in front of the District Collectorate and demand the government implementation of drought relief measures at the earliest. “The government is acting insensitive to the plight of farmers in the district. Despite the failure of crops and severe drought prevailing everywhere, the State government has not taken any kind of drought relief measure till date.
We demand that the government immediately pay compensation to the farmers for their crop loss,” said Tammineni Veerabhadram. The CPM State secretary felt that the MGNREGA scheme was not being implemented properly and many poor people were forced to migrate to other cities and urban areas in search of livelihood. For protecting the cattle sellers in the markets, the secretary demanded that the government suspend the contractor’s license and help the farmers.
