Nizamabad: District Collector Dr Yogita Rana on Saturday inspected rainwater harvesting structures, farm ponds and individual toilets’ construction in the district under the NREGS programme. She said rainwater harvesting structures help seep water into the earth thereby increasing groundwater table.

She said farm ponds were useful to farmers and suggested them to plant saplings near them as part of Haritha Haram. She sensitised people on the ill-effects of open defecation and conserving water. She inspected the NREGS works at Sadasiva Nagar and Uppalwai in Kamareddy division, Palvonha and LR Palli in Machareddy division, Malkapur in Domakonda division, Baswapur in Bhiknoor division and Pedda Mallareddy in Kamareddy division.

She asked villagers to treat water as gold. She attributed dried bore wells getting recharged in Uppalwai and people migrated from the village to other places returning to the village to rainwater harvesting structures. Therefore, she asked villagers to pay attention to the NREGS works implementation and cooperate with the district administration in improving the groundwater table.

She said 78 villages in the district have been declared free from open defecation and hinted at declaring Banswada, Nizamabad rural, Balkonda and Armoor constituencies free from open defecation in the next 25 days. She expressed happiness over Uppalwai panchayat declaring the village as open defecation-free and also the village being free from child labour.

She advised expectant mothers to visit Anganwadi centres without fail and derive benefit from government programmes meant for them. Kamareddy Revenue Divisional Officer Nagesh Reddy, Sarpanchs Aravind Goud and others accompanied the district Collector on her tour.
