GOVT FAILURE IN TACKLING DROUGHT SITUATION

Hyderabad: Responding to the call given by Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy, the Congress cadre across the State took up protest programmes on Wednesday in a big way alleging that the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government had failed in taking up drought relief works. Hundreds of Congress activists staged dharnas in front of mandal and division offices and district collectorates.

Congress activists took up huge protest programmes at Mandamarri in Adilabad district, Acchampet in Mahbubnagar, Hasanparthi in Warangal and Garidepalli in Nalgonda district. Congress cadre staged a rasta roko on the highway near Yadagirigutta. Due to the rasta roko, traffic jammed for a while. The devotees coming to the Yadagirigutta temple faced hardships due to the protest. In Karimnagar, the Congress activists staged protest programmes across the district.

Former Minister D Sridhar Babu and former MP Ponnam Prabhakar participated in the protest programmes. Congress activists burnt effigies of the government while taking up rasta rokos. Later, they submitted memorandums to the mandal officials asking them to take up drought relief works immediately.

They also demanded in their memorandums that the government provide works to the labour under NREGS and release arrears of the NREGS workers. At the same time, the government should release ‘Asara’ pensions, set up ‘ganji centres’, ‘ambali centres’, ‘fodder centres’ and ‘water tanks’ while taking up steps to clear the drinking water scarcity in rural areas, they demanded. MLAs, MPs, DCC presidents and party leaders participated in the programmes in various parts of the State.
