Indian agriculture over the past two decades has been facing a catastrophic crisis, characterized by a reduced food grain production that is not able to keep pace with the rapidly rising rate of population. At the same time, climate change has been noted to be one of the most significant factors to the current crisis since this greatly contributes to reduction of food grain productivity losses. Further, climate risks are increasing at a greater rate than ever before threatening cropping patterns etc, among others.

In order to address the issues emanating as such, and to introduce policy interventions aimed at combating climate change impacts on agriculture, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI)and Centre for Good Governance (CGG) have been jointly conducting specialised programs. One such initiative is the “Capacity Building on Climate Smart Agriculture”, which to build capacities senior officers of agriculture and allied departments of south Indian states. The program resulted in a book titled “Climate Smart Agriculture” edited by Prof. Devi Prasad Juvvadi, Director (Agricultural Management), CGG. The book published by BS publications provides an overview of the challenges that are being faced by the agricultural sector due to climate change and explores ways to address these challenges. Governance of drought assumes a special focus in the book.

The book was released by the Chief Minister of Telangana state, Shri. K. Chandrasekhara Rao in a public meeting held on the 27th of April in Khammam. Prof. Devi Prasad further added that the book has been dedicated to the vision, strategic foresight driven policies of Shri. K. Chandrasekhara Rao and his commitment to transform the lives of farmers of Telangana state. The meeting was attended by the deputy chief ministers, Mohammad Mahmood Ali, Kadiyam Srihari, ministers Tummala Nageshwara Rao, Etala Rajender, other ministers K.Keshava Rao and several MLAS, MPs and MLCs.
