Hyderabad: The State government has embarked on the task of weeding out the “corrupt babus.” Based on the reports submitted by the State Vigilance Commission and the confidential information furnished by the respective Departments, the government has cracked the whip against the “tainted officials.”

To begin with, officials facing graft charges in the Municipal Administration and Urban Development ( MA &UD), headed by KT Rama Rao, were already served notices and sought their explanation in a stipulated time.

Nearly 70 officials ranging from town planning heads, engineers in infrastructure division to assistant and divisional commissioners of the municipalities and municipal corporations were asked to prove the charges framed against them in the report are false.

Retired officials of the MA& UD Department were also not spared. Many of the officials were facing allegations that sub- standard works were taken up during their stint in the urban local bodies. And some of them allegedly violated guidelines in sanctioning the works to the contractors and took commissions.

“Action would be initiated against all officials if they fail to submit written statement in defence on or before the date specified in the notices,” a top official told The Hans India and added that some officials had already responded to the notices and their statements were under scrutiny.

The corrupt officials of other departments were already under radar. All the departments had been instructed to begin the process of serving notices on the officials who were charged with corruption and also dereliction of their duties.

Revenue Department, Panchayat Raj and Rural Development, Commercial taxes, Roads and Buildings , Housing, Civil Supplies , Energy, Agriculture and Education Departments zeroed in on the officials whose names cropped up in the vigilance report. The veracity of the vigilance report is under scrutiny. Around 2,000 officials would face action once the final round of verification is completed.
