Mahbubnagar: District Collector T K Sridevi on Wednesday called upon the people to construct more rainwater harvesting pits to conserve water and drive away drought from the district.

While inspecting the rainwater harvesting pits, spring ponds being constructed under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Guarantee Programme (MGNREGA) at Timmayapally village in Addakal mandal on Wednesday, the Collector said the construction of more rainwater harvesting pits and conversion of small spring ponds into large tanks would help in preserving water, which increases ground water table.

“We can drive away drought problems from the district if each individual works towards constructing rainwater harvesting pits. During the past three years, Mahbubnagar had received normal rains only once and saw severe drought conditions gradually.

As majority of people are depending on agriculture for their livelihood, it is everyone’s responsibility to construct farm ponds, pits and tanks to conserve water in the district,” said the Collector while inaugurating the rainwater harvesting pit at Timmayapally thanda.

Later the Collector inspected the construction works under Mission Kakatiya where a spring pond was being converted into a bigger lake with a cost of Rs 7 lakh.

The Collector appreciated the work done by the field and technical assistants. She also commended the initiative by Damodar Reddy, Project Director, District Water Management Authority (DWMA).

Keeping in view, the severe drought conditions, the Collector felt that there was a need for constructing more number of spring ponds in the district. She also said there was a need to create more awareness on the benefits of spring ponds to the farmers.

“So far we have constructed 206 spring ponds in the district. If we divert the rainwater flowing in the mountains towards the spring ponds it will increase ground water table and help the farmers with better crop yield,” said the Collector.

The Collector also inspected the works under Mission Kakatiya at Ponnakal village and enquired about the teak plantation reared by a farmer in the village.
