NPDCL suffers loss of 4.09 crore, SPDCL Rs 1.6 crore

Hyderabad: Energy Minister G Jagadish Reddy on Wednesday said that the recent rains in the State have caused a loss of over `5.5 crore to the power utilities. Speaking to the media, the Minister said that the rains on May 6 caused severe damage to 33 KV, 11 KV and LT poles, and DTRs resulting in losses of `4.09 crore to Northern Power Distribution Company (NPDCL) and a loss of Rs 1.60 crore to Southern Power Distribution Company (SPDCL).

The Minister informed that there were 20,000 complaints during this period of which 90 per cent were resolved within 12 hours. “In the NPDCL region, 5,494 LT lines, 2,360 11-KV lines, nine 33-KV lines and 595 DTRs (distribution transformers) were damaged. About 6,987 complaints were received of which only 38 are still pending. On May 6 alone, breakdown of 713 11-KV feeders and 63 33-KV feeders were registered, he said.

In the SPDCL region, 668 LT lines, 454 11-KV lines, seven 33-KV lines and 53 DTRs were damaged. "The control room of SPDCL received 10,006 complaints on May 4 and 14,164 complaints on May 6. The rains however, have contributed to the decrease in demand for power by nearly 1800 MWs,” the Minister said.

He further said that the power utilities were ready to supply about 12,500 MWs of power to the State. “During April 2014, the demand was 6,493 MW, in April 2015 the demand was 6,661 MWs and this year it was 7,194 MW. The additional demand could be met because of installation of 235 new transformers, he said.

“The last Chief Minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, Kiran Kumar Reddy had predicted that there would be darkness in Telangana if it became a separate State. But credit goes to Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao for proving Kiran Kumar Reddy wrong. In two years, under the leadership of KCR, Telangana has managed to overcome its power woes,” said Jagadish Reddy.

Replying to a question, the Minister said that the Telangana government had written to the AP energy department to provide power to them at Rs 4.63 per unit as promised, but there was no reply from them. “They say that they will provide power at a cheaper rate than private companies but do not even bother to reply to the letter from Telangana officials,” criticised the minister.

Energy Minister Jagdish Reddy said the app would enable the consumers check the particulars of their bill and make payment through debit/ credit cards or the net banking."The app would also inform the consumers about the power interruptions and necessary precautions to be taken during power cuts," the Minister said at a press conference.
