Hyderabad: The Civil Supplies department has come across more than 20,000 government employees possessing white ration cards, during Aadhar seeding process being undertaken by the government.

20k govt employees with white cards found

The white ration cards, which are now being referred to as ‘Food Security Card’ is in the process of being seeded with Aadhar cards, for ensuring the essential supplies provided by the government reach the eligible beneficiaries.

As part of this process the authorities had taken up the process of removing more than 20 lakh bogus and ineligible names of card holders from the list. But during the process they have come across thousands of cards belonging to government employees, a senior officer of the civil supplies department told The Hans India.

For instance, at least 4000 employees belonging to Railways were found to be possessing white cards. District wise Adilabad-130, Nizamabad-75, Karimnagar-200, Ranga Reddy-60, Nalgonda-140, Medak-185, Hyderabad-200, Mahbubnagar-100, Khammam-800 and Warangal-2000 were identified.

Similarly, 15,000 RTC employees were found to be in possession of these cards. The other departments include police, electricity and water works whose employees were enjoying the benefits of the Public Distribution System (PDS) and Arogyashri. The department officials believe that some 10,000 more cards belonging to government employees of other departments could be unearthed shortly.

By 2014, about 1 lakh cards possessed by the government employees were already identified. In the Aadhar seeding process currently taken up by the department, it was found that out of 1.4 crore households, 90 lakh were below poverty line (BPL).

Hence, the Civil Supplies Department is the process of cleaning all the ineligible beneficiaries by identifying households whose income levels are more than Rs 2 lakh and also the government employees.

“We want to ensure that all the new Food Security Cards are handed over to the genuine beneficiaries, lest the entire exercise goes futile with anomalies creeping in,” said a higher official.
