Hyderabad: In order to facilitate and enhance public connectivity from peripheral areas to the core city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is planning to introduce new generation trams in Hyderabad.
- The project will improve public transport facility in the city to the extent of at least 40 per cent
- Several MNCs, including Keolis, Codatu and Luminas express interest in the project
The project would be taken up under public-private partnership (PPP) or annuity mode as per agreement made by the Telangana State government with the sister cities in 2015.
Speaking to mediapersons, GHMC Mayor Bonthu Rammohan said that during his recent visit to Borde city in France, he had discussed several developmental programmes with the French authorities which could be taken up in the city.
He said that several multi-national companies had expressed interest in taking up projects, including trams, development of Musi River and its beautification and the Charminar pedestrian project.
The GHMC mayor further said that the multinational companies, including Keolis, Codatu and Luminas had expressed keen interest in taking up the tram project and even studied the city conditions and prepared a detailed project report.
He said they even assured that the project would be constructed in such a way that it would not cause any damage to the heritage structures in Hyderabad. The mayor said that project would be finalised in December after a visit by a French delegation.
He said that this project would help Hyderabad in improving the connectivity from peripheral areas to the heart of the city. Considering the land availability in the city, the State government would construct all future projects, including double bedroom projects for the urban poor on the outskirts of Hyderabad, he said.
The tram project aims at improving the public transport facility in the city to the extent of at least 40 per cent, which is only 20 per cent now, he added.
