‘Give up cotton, go for alternative crops’
Deputy Chief Minister K Srihari has exhorted the farmers in the district to take up cultivation of crops like maize, red-gram, green-gram and other pulses as an alternate to cotton crop.
Warangal: Deputy Chief Minister K Srihari has exhorted the farmers in the district to take up cultivation of crops like maize, red-gram, green-gram and other pulses as an alternate to cotton crop.
He directed the agriculture officials to undertake campaigning to educate the farmers in that direction as the demand for cotton has come down drastically in the international market. He suggested conducting a week-long programme in the villages on the issue.
The farmers should be given complete information on alternate crops, availability of seeds and crops loans, he said while stressing on the need to educate farmers on the scenario in the international market.
The Deputy CM along with Tourism Minister A Chandulal, District Collector Vakati Karuna and others has held a review meeting with agriculture official and its allied departments here on Saturday on kharif preparedness in the district.
It might be easy task to discourage the farmers from taking up cotton yet it should be taken as a challenge in the interest of the farming community. Intensive campaign covering all the villages should be made along with distribution of pamphlets.
Those coming forward to take up pulses should be provided input subsidy, subsidised seeds and fertilizers, the Deputy CM said.
District Collector Karuna said it was planned to take up soybean, maize, red gram, green gram and other pulses in about 1.50 lakh acres in the current Kharif. Seeds and fertilisers were ready for distribution.
In addition to that, soil tests were conducted across the district achieving 100 percent target and soil health cards would be distributed to the farmers soon. Efforts were on to computerise the process of distributing loans and other benefits through online system. It was planned to dig up 25,000 farm ponds in the district, she added.
Zilla Parishad Chairperson G Padma, Joint Collector Prashanth Jeevan Patil, Agriculture Joint Director B Gangaram, Animal Husbandry Joint Director Venkaiah Naidu and others attended the meeting. On the day, Tourism Minister Chandulal has reviewed the arrangements for Telangana State Formation Day celebrations. He asked the officials to organise week-long cultural events and programmes highlighting the government welfare schemes.
