Hyderabad: Maj Gen Pachory, General Officer Commanding (GOC), TS and Andhra Sub Area has put the ball in the Defence Ministry’s court as far as the deferment of closure of Gough Road.

  • Several officials put forward the case of postponing the date of closure of Gough Road until alternate roads are constructed
  • The Defence Ministry had extended the date for a period of six months on the condition that alternate roads would be constructed

The district Collector, two zonal Commissioners, RDO and other officials had a meeting at the Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma’s office here on Monday.

The officials put forward the case of postponing the date of closure of Gough Road until alternate roads are constructed, but the 40 minutes meeting did not prove fruitful as the GOC said that the order had to come from the Defence Ministry.

The last time the date was deferred in November 2015 was after the intervention of the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. The Defence Ministry had extended the date for a period of six months on the condition that alternate roads would be constructed.

The deadline will come to an end on May 31. According to sources, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) officials promised to construct alternative roads in a year’s time and suggested that the Gough road be kept opened till then.

With just a week remaining, citizens are hoping that the Chief Minister would once again speak to the Defence Ministry. The closure of the roads would affect 13 lakh people residing in and around the Secunderabad Cantonment.
