Hyderabad: The TRS government, which was chanting “Bangaru Telangana” mantra is in fact gagging democratic forces to eliminate the opposition, the Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee said here on Wednesday.

Speaking to the media at Gandhi Bhavan here on Wednesday, TPCC vice president Mallu Ravi and general secretary Mahesh Kumar Goud alleged that the TRS government had been sending democratic forces and intellectuals to jails in order perpetuate dynastic rule.

They said though Civil Liberties leaders Prof Haragopal and Virasam’s Varavara Rao participated in Telangana movement vigorously, the TRS government had detained them in Bhongir on the pretext that they would support Naxalites at the meeting held in Warangal.

The TPCC leaders demanded that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao explain as to why he detained Prof Haragopal and Varavara Rao.

The Telangana Democratic Front organised the meeting following the High Court giving permission to it. They further said the government was hatching a conspiracy to suppress movement in the Osmania University though the students had played a key role in separate Telangana agitation.

They took objection to the government ordering installation of Closed-Circuit Television Cameras and deploying plainclothesmen in the university. The government installed CCTV cameras worth Rs 9 crore on the University campus and using police for continuous surveillance on the students to suppress opposition.
