It has been a long journey for the multi-faceted personality Vodithela Lakshmikantha Rao, popularly known as Captain saab and a close relative of former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao, who served in the high altitudes of Sikkim and participated in the Indo-Pak war, as he is all set to enter the House of Elders.
Karimnagar/Warangal: It has been a long journey for the multi-faceted personality Vodithela Lakshmikantha Rao, popularly known as Captain saab and a close relative of former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao, who served in the high altitudes of Sikkim and participated in the Indo-Pak war, as he is all set to enter the House of Elders.
It may be mentioned here that TRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao has on Thursday named Captain and Dharmapuri Srinivas as party’s candidates for the two Rajya Sabha seats falling vacant as the term of Gundu Sudha Rani and V Hanumantha Rao in Telangana will expire on June 21.
Born to Kamala, Srinivas Rao couple in Singapuram village under Huzurabad mandal in Karimnagar district on November 17, 1939, Captain has been active politically since his college days. He served as the Osmania University Science College general secretary and was a NCC Cadet also. Albeit Vodithela family has been in the thick of politics for over a half-of-a-century, Captain’s emergence in the State politics came to limelight following his catalytic role in the shaping of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) in 2001.
Joined in the Army as a Senior Commissioned Officer in 1963, he participated in Indo-Pak war in 1965 and worked with the 57 Mountain Regiment Raised in 1966 for counter-insurgency operations in Mizoram, before leaving the Army in 1968. After Indo-Pak war, he was also a recipient of Raksha Medal.
He, later, by participating in the Green Revolution on Lal Bahadur Shastri’s call “Jai Jawan Jai Kisan,” has become one of the rare personalities having worked as both Jawan and Kisan. Early in his political life, he served as the sarpanch of Singapuram village for two terms between 1983 and 1995. Later, he was elected as MPTC and was elevated to the post of vice-president of Karimnagar DCC.
After the emergence of TRS, he twice represented Huzurabad constituency as MLA and also served as a Minister in the coalition government of Y S Rajasekhar Reddy between 2004 and 2005. After the formation of Telangana State, he made way for his son Sathish Kumar, who now represents Husnabad Assembly constituency. Currently, Captain’s wife Sarojini Devi is the president of Huzurabad Mandal Praja Parishad.
This apart, the 77-year-old Captain is also an eminent educationist and has been the beacon of success of the various technical institutions such as KITS-Warangal, KITS-Singapuram, his native village in Karimnagar district, KITS-Ramtek (Maharashtra), Warangal Public School and Vijetha Public School in Hyderabad.
Though he belongs to Singapuram in Huzurabad mandal, he later settled in Hanamkonda. His proximity to the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao is well known as the latter prefers to stay in the residence of the Captain. It may be mentioned here that Captain is the younger brother of the former Congress Rajya Sabha member Rajeshwar Rao, well known as Singapuram Rajanna, said to be the man Friday of P V Narasimha Rao.
