Hyderabad: Condemning the decision of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB) to include Somasila Project under the Krishna River basin, Roads and Buildings Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao on Sunday said that the board was taking decision beyond its jurisdiction.

  • Says KRMB was taking decisions beyond its jurisdiction
  • KRMB is only a temporary appointment, he says
  • KRMB has the only responsibility of ensuring that no crops get dried up in the two Telugu-speaking States

Addressing press conference at Telangana Bhavan here, Nageswara Rao said that the board was formed to adjudicate the water management between the two States and this was a temporary appointment. “The board has the only responsibility of ensuring that no crops get dried up in the two Telugu-speaking States but it is intervening in the issues which are not under its purview,” alleged Nageswara Rao.

The Minister said that it was not good on the part of the board to intervene in the issues pending before the Tribunal. “It is not proper to issue notification when the matter was under the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal,” he said, adding that the Telangana State was considered as the fourth State and the arguments were still going on.

The Minister further said that had allocation been made in the Upper Krishna, the Telangana region would have got water through gravity. He said that they would lodge a complaint with the Government of India against the decisions of the Krishna Board. Since the TDP was an ally of the Central government, it was bringing up notification like these, he alleged.

The Minister suggested the Andhra Pradesh government to utilise the water as per the allocation. He said that the government had re-designed the projects and not initiated construction of any new project. The TRS government was completing the project initiated during the undivided Andhra Pradesh, he said.

He reminded that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had even invited his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu for talks over the irrigation waters. “Our Chief Minister in Assembly made it clear that Telangana would not utilise a single drop of water from the share of Andhra Pradesh. We have made it clear that we have no objections on Polavaram and only requested to avoid the loss to Telangana because of this project,” added Nageswara Rao.
