Hyderabad: Reiterating her stand on “divisiveness,” Teesta Setalvad, civil rights activist and journalist, said the Union government was politicising every aspect, including the police force. Intolerance for dissent was growing and solely blamed the Central government for polarising the country.

She was speaking at a function organised by the Rainbow shopping festival in the Old City on Monday. Launching a scathing attack against the Union government, Teesta said, “Subverting narratives has become the order of the day and missing files a norm. As many as 40 CDs and transcripts of Malegaon riots have gone missing and several files pertaining to different riots in the country have been destroyed.”

The Gujarat model had become a national model. There was corporatisation of all institutions, including the media, she lamented. Echoing similar sentiment was Tushar Gandhi, great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, said the biggest threat was to the freedom of thought.

Corporatisation had spread to such an extent that in Parliament 85 per cent of the MPs were ‘crorepatis’ and 2/3rd had stake in mining companies and the media, said Teesta. The surest way to win an election was to go on a tirade of hate speeches and fan communalism, she said.
