Hyderabad: Telangana JAC Chairman M Kodandaram has said the JAC would approach the Green Tribunal to get the open cast mining stalled. Addressing the media at the end of the two-hour JAC steering committee meeting held at its office here on Wednesday, Kodandaram said the appointment of Singareni Collieries Company Limited CMD has been sought to request him to stop the open cast mining.

“We have visited open cast mines in Mancherial and there are some more to visit. We will complete the programme in June. We have sought an appointment with the Singareni CMD and we will strive to stop that,” said Kodandaram. The JAC will approach the National Green Tribunal, if necessary, he said stating that there was need for change in the manual.

Kodandaram said the JAC would continue its struggle as per the action plan decided earlier. It has been fighting to get the closed industries re-opened, on drought mitigation and against open cast mining. He said the JAC seeks reopening of the Hindustan Cables Limited (HCL) and the Nizam Sugars. Stating that the Railways have come forward to take over the HCL, he asked the state and Center to take steps to reopen the closed industry.

The JAC chairman, who has drawn flak from ministers and TRS leaders for his criticism of the government, has decided to challenge the government in Gajwel, the constituency of Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, to make the people aware of the Land Acquisition Act. The government had proposed Mallanna Sagar project in Medak and this was affecting many villagers.

The JAC has proposed to make the villagers aware of the Land Acquisition Act, 2013. “There is no awareness among the villagers. Presently, the government is paying compensation on the basis of a GO. In fact, it should pay the best compensation as per the Land Acquisition Act, 2013. We will hold a seminar in Gajwel to make the villagers aware of the Act,” said Kodandaram.

Reacting on the outbursts of ministers and TRS leaders, Kodandaram asked as to why so many ministers had to talk when they claim that there was no JAC. “Irrespective of any number of attacks and obstructions, the JAC would continue its journey,” he said, adding that the JAC was formed then with an objective of achieving statehood to Telangana.
