Hyderabad: In a first-of-its-kind agreement in the country, the NTPC, Singareni Collieries (SCCL) and the Railways reached a tripartite pact here on June 10 on the supply of 35 lakh more tonnes of coal through the merry-go-round railway line at Ramagundam in Karimnagar district. It follows the SCR and the NTPC agreeing to provide rakes, as suggested by the SCCL. The agreement came into immediate effect.

Representatives of the three organisations initiated the agreement in the presence of SCR General Manager Ravindra Gupta at Rail Nilayam in Secunderabad, a press release issued by the SCCL said. It stated that the pact was the first such to be signed on the merry-go-round transportation of coal from SCCL to the NTPC thermal plant.

According to the release, SCCL supplies 90 lakh tonnes coal to the NTPC in Ramagundam-2 area, ‘through sailo,’ which will be transported by NTPC through its own merry-go-round circular rail route. The agreement will now provide for an additional supply of 35 lakh tonnes of coal, in view of the increased power generation, through rail wagons from Ramakrishnapur and Mandamarri to a distance of 30 km.

The NTPC which was paying Rs 260 as the charge for a ton of coal will now pay only Rs 45, saving Rs 215. This will benefit the SCCL, as it can now transport coal easily from Ramagundam OC-3 mine. Also, the railways will get definite revenue from a non-railway route.

Ramagundam-2 Area General Manager V Vijaypal Reddy inaugurated the merry-go-round transportation of coal on the same day. J Nagayya, SCCL General Manager (Marketing) said the agreement will pave the way for the company to achieve its targets and expedite coal movement from Ramagundam OC-3 mine. Among those who signed the agreement were Namburi Srinivas, SCCL Executive Director, M D Shekaran, Chief Commercial Manager, SCR, U K Dasgupta, NTPC General Manager (O&M).
