Hyderabad: Transport officials cracked the whip on managements of several schools in the city for failing to get a fitness certificate and seized nearly 40 vehicles during a special drive on Monday as schools re-opened after summer vacation.

Officials said that they were forced to carry out the special drive as only 12,600 of the 25,000 school buses have completed fitness test till date. There are more than 21,000 educational institution buses plying in the State.

Transport officials seized five buses of various educational institutions in LB Nagar, five in Rajendranagar and one bus in Trimulgherry. Officials said buses were seized for not having required documents like fitness certificates, insurance papers, driving licence of the school bus driver, registration papers, transport permit and safety equipment like first-aid box and fire extinguisher in the bus.

As per the rules, all educational institution buses must carry mandatory required documents such as fitness certificates, registration papers, insurance papers, transport permit, driving licence of the school bus driver, equipments like fire extinguisher and a first-aid box.

Trimulgherry Motor Vehicle Inspector M Balram said that breaks, tyres, condition of the vehicle, documents, drives licences were checked during the fitness test. He further said a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher and an emergency window were the important parameters checked before issuing the certificate.

The Motor Vehicle Inspector also said any person beyond 50 years was not permitted to drive vehicles used for transporting students. And for the safety of the students, a bus should have grills on the windows, he added.

Joint Transport Commissioner (Vigilance) B Venkateshwarlu said that there were more than 21,000 educational institution buses in the State out of which only 12,600 school buses have completed fitness test till date. He further said that necessary instructions were issued to verify the remaining buses.

He said vehicles without fitness certificates (FC) would be seized and a police case filed. In addition to that, the permit of the vehicles would be cancelled and also licences of the drivers would be suspended for minimum period of three months, he said. However, the fitness test is taken place once in a year and the fitness is resisted up to May 15 every year so that the school management can repair the vehicle during the vacation period, he added.

The Joint Transport Commissioner said, over the past one year the quality of maintenance and operations have improved. The Transport department also asked the school managements to upload details of the school bus driver and conductor online.

Responding to queries on private buses, he said school managements were not supposed to hire any kind of private vehicle.
