Energy Minister G Jagadishwar Reddy agrees to resolve some major demands raised by Electricity Department employees

Hyderabad: Telangana electricity employees called off their proposed strike following an assurance by Energy Minister G Jagadishwar Reddy, who agreed to resolve some major demands like increasing the ex gratia amount to deceased outsourcing employees to Rs 10 lakh.

The Energy Minister, who held a review meeting with the electricity employees in his chamber on Tuesday, said the employees working in Genco, Transco, SPDCL and NPDCL had served a strike notice with a charter of demands. The Minister said that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was in favour of resolving the long-pending demands of the employees and assured to look into their problems.

He said that the government had decided to increase the ex gratia amount to the deceased outsourcing employees from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. The government also decided to pay medical expenses of employees injured in accidents. He said that work stress would be brought down in the Energy Department by filling up vacant posts and also regularising the services of contract employees including junior linemen.

The Minister said that the multiple agency system of recruiting outsourcing employees would be removed within three months. A decision to shift from EPF to GPF would also be taken, he added. He asked the employees to withdraw the strike notice.

The agitating employees said that the Minister had given a positive reply to them and hence they decided to withdraw their intended strike. They demanded that the government provide salary to contract employees through the treasury. They said the agency system should be removed from the department.

The demands of the employees include regularisation of all contract labourers, equal pay for equal work till the regularisation of the contract labour, withdrawal of contract system in the core nature of works, filling up of all the existing vacancies in the cadre of JLM, JPA, junior assistants, sub-engineers, watchmen, drivers and others and a job to the family of a deceased employee, removal of criminal cases registered on employees for accidents even though they were no way connected.
