Hyderabad: Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Thursday asked officials to find out ways and means to turn the State Road Transport Corporation into a profit-making entity and provide better transportation facilities. He is to take up a detailed review on the functioning of RTC on Friday with officials from the Transport Department and RTC.

The Chief Minister called for a detailed discussion on why an organisation which is transporting 90 lakh people every day, is in losses. He wondered as to how a State-owned Corporation was making losses when even the tax-paying private operators were earning profits. The Chief Minister wanted the leaders of recognised Unions to take part in the review meeting.

Expressing confidence that there were many ways to turn around the fortunes of the RTC, he said that creative thinking was the need of the hour. He advised the officials to create a new position of executive director (revenue) in the Corporation.

He said the Corporation should focus not only on passenger service but also on advertisements, transport of goods and courier services. If needed, the buses should be taken to the door steps of the passengers if there were more than 15 passengers, he said.

The Chief Minister also wanted buses to be operated during festivals and at pilgrim centres and advised the public representatives to spend money for providing better amenities at the bus stations.

Appealing to workers not to go on strikes for political reasons, he reminded them that they were given a fitment of 44 percent even though the Corporation was making losses. In the same vein, he warned of strong action against workers if they still struck work.

RTC JMD G V Ramana Rao was appointed as Managing Director of TSRTC for a period of two years. The Chief Minister directed the Principal Secretary of Transport Sunil Sharma to issue orders accordingly.
