Hyderabad: The Telangana state government is contemplating handing over some important arterial roads and their maintenance to private companies.

Expressing displeasure over the poor condition of roads in the city, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K Taraka Rama Rao opined that Hyderabad can never become a global destination if the corporation fails to improve its infrastructure and civic amenities.

The MA&UD Minister was speaking at a day-long workshop held to review the quality of engineering works in GHMC limits at Marri Channa Reddy Human Resource Development Institute (MCRHRD). KTR enquired with GHMC officials about the poor quality of roads in the city.

The MA&UD minister even pointed out that he was late by 20 minutes to the workshop due to the poor condition of the roads. Annoyed at the pathetic condition of roads KTR said, “How can we claim Hyderabad as an international city if we cannot pave way for ambulances.” He expressed displeasure at the repeated digging of roads to lay pipelines.

The MA&UD Minister said despite spending several crores of rupees on city roads, they were getting washed way frequently. He observed that the existing tender process had lacunae in it and he has decided to fix standard security road (SSR) rates and hand over the maintenance of city roads to private companies.

He said that private firms would lay roads and look after their maintenance for a stipulated time in the range of three to five years. He clarified that GHMC engineers must inspect the quality of roads at regular intervals. The minister said that the state government would also amend the GHMC Act to lay more inner ring roads.

The IT minister further asked officials to plunge in to action in order to provide basic civic amenities, apart from developing the city’s infrastructure at a swift pace. "Can’t we work together and co-ordinate for better roads as they are found in foreign countries," he asked officials.

He pointed out that bad roads were causing traffic chaos and also causing environmental pollution. GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy and MA&UD principal M G Gopal, mayor B Rammohan, deputy mayor Fasiuddin Baba, city police commissioner Mahender Reddy and other officials attended the workshop.
