Nizamabad: District Collector Dr Yogitha Rana said that the local people’s representatives have been entrusted with the responsibility of implementing the Haritha-Haaram programme in the villages.

Addressing the MPP members, ZPTC members, mandal change agents, mahila samakhya presidents at an awareness camp on the implementation of the Haritha-Haaram programme at the Zilla Parishad conference hall in the town on Wednesday, she said under the programme, the local representatives of the people have to take up the responsibility of monitoring its implementation and ensure that 40,000 saplings are planted in each gram panchayat.

The District Collector said that employees of all government departments in the district would be involved in the Haritha-Haraam programme. She said that meetings would be organised in all the mandals with the employees and people’s representatives on Thursday to chalk out a programme to plant 3.35 crore saplings in the district by the end of July.

They should coordinate with each other in the implementation of the programme, she added. Collector Rana urged the employees and local leaders to spend atleast one hour every day for the implementation of the Haritha-Haaram programme in order to reach the annual targets.

She said that the government would release funds under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) to protect the plants or saplings and ensure their proper growth. It is the responsibility of the MPP members, ZPTC members and village sarpanches to supervise the field level staff in the proper implementation of Haritha Haaram programme.

The District Collector said that the State government would bear the costs of planting the saplings and also rearing them. For planting the saplings, the government would bear Rs 153.83 crore and for growing them, Rs 14.23 crore, she added.

She said that plants which were commercially viable could also be grown. Trees such as nilgiri (jamail), neem and nallathumma (black babul tree) could be grown, she added. The Malabar neem plants were also useful, she added.

The District Collector lamented that the district received 44 percent of less rainfall last year as the greenery was getting destroyed with large scale felling of trees and this led to drought.

She said that the Central government has resolved to declare Nizamabad as no open defecation district by October this year. The Centre is satisfied with the digging of rain water harvesting pits and construction of grave yards and dumping yards. She said that the future generations would greatly be benefited by the massive plantation drive as it would safeguard the environment from ecological disasters and climate changes.

The District collector presented Haritha-Haaram shawls to all the local leaders and urged them to become partners in its implementation.
Zilla Parishad CEO Mohan Lal, DWMA project director Venkateshwarlu, DRDA project director Chandramohan Reddy, DFO Prasad and others were present.
