Hyderabad: In a significant move, Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao on Thursday wrote to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh to hand over the entire land belonging to AP Bhavan in New Delhi to Telangana State.

The Chief Minister, in his letter to Rajnath Singh, said the erstwhile government of Nizam of Hyderabad obtained a total of 18.18 acre in Delhi from the Government of India in three phases in 1917, 1928 and 1936 on payment as per the records of the then Foreign and Political Department of Government of India.

The Chief Minister said these properties belonged to the then State of Hyderabad under the rule of VIth Nizam, which remained a separate State even after India’s independence. It was eventually included in the Union in the year 1948.

Incidentally, Andhra Pradesh did not exist then, as it was carved out of the erstwhile Madras State in October 1953 only, whereas the State of Hyderabad continued to exist as such from 1948 until November, 1956 when ‘Andhra State’ was merged with the Telugu speaking areas of Hyderabad State to create the State of Andhra Pradesh on November 1, 1956, said the Chief Minister.

He said Telangana State was formed on June 2, 2014, which was a case of demerger rather than the creation of a new State.

The Chief Minister argued that the property situated in Delhi belonged to the Nizam and subsequently to the Hyderabad State in the Union of India. Hence, it should also devolve to Telangana and cannot be divided between AP and Telangana.

He requested that the entire land presently in possession of AP Bhavan should be transferred to the government of Telangana and AP might be allotted some other land in Delhi to set up its State Bhavan and Resident’s Commissioner’s office.

He further requested the Union Home Minister to take early decision so that the Telangana government can start constructing Telangana Bhavan with adequate facilities including a cultural centre for people of the State living in Delhi.
