Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is contemplating to take up a pilot project in one of the 150 wards by providing world-class infrastructure and later extending it to other parts of Hyderabad as part of the State government’s efforts to make Hyderabad a favourite destination for global investors.
Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao at a recent review meeting instructed officials to visit role model municipal bodies across the country and adopt the best policies to realise Chief Minister K Chandrashekar’s dream of making Hyderabad a world-class city. “KTR asked us to study the best practices followed in different municipal bodies and implement them in the 'model ward',” an official said.

World-class infrastructure includes superior quality black top roads, white top roads, plastic roads, underground cabling system and drinking water and sanitation facilities. Apart from these, the wards would cover about 35 per cent plantation, model markets, two bedroom houses for the urban poor, digital and uniform sign boards, uniform taxation convergence dash board which would display the duration of ongoing works of all departments.
GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy, who is accountable for the 'model ward' project, asked all the deputy commissioners to select a ward or two from their respective circles to take up the project.
The GHMC official further said that after developing the model ward the corporation would increase the number of circles from 24 to 30. He said that the MA&UD Minister felt that the pace of the works and development would be easy with greater decentralisation.
The official also said that the State government would showcase the model ward to multi-national companies to attract investments to take up its flagship programmes like Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP).
Officials and HoDs in GHMC would visit various municipal bodies across the country over the next one month and submit a detail project report (DPR) by August second week. After scrutinising the report, the GHMC Commissioner would select a ward to develop the ‘model ward’ from September this year.
