Nalgonda: First in studies, best in sports, top place in all competitions is what defines Vangamarthi High School, situated on the Warangal-Hyderabad highway. But the school building is in a dilapidated condition leaving the students and teachers to spend the school hours in tension.

Four days back, the school was shutdown to avoid an untoward incident in view of heavy downpour. It only exemplifies the miserable plight of the institution.

At present, about 400 students are studying at the school. The Vangamarthi students are known to perform well in all competitions. The school secured first position in the mandal in recent SSC-2016 examination results. They made their mark in extra circular activities as well.

However, the other side of the coin is very disheartening. Nobody dares to send their ward once they visit the school building. No one knows when the slab would collapse. It became a common practice for the students and teachers to run out of the classes whenever flakes start falling.

The iron rods in the ceiling are visible. Despite knowing the situation, they have been sending their kids to the school due to their bad economic condition. Some of the teachers even got injured several times when flakes from the slab fell on them. The teachers have submitted several representations to the public representatives and officials but the issue remains unresolved.

Moreover, Vangamarthi village is the native place of Alair MLA Gongidi Sunitha. The villagers alleged that she never showed concern towards the school. If government cannot focus on such schools, the dream of regaining the lost glory of government schools can never be realised, the villagers opined.

When contacted, Gongidi Sunitha said that there were no funds for the school last year. This year funds were released and the problem would be resolved, she said. The building would be demolished and a new one would be constructed,
she assured.
