Chinnakodur (Medak): The State government may soon be facing another Mallannasagar kind of a situation, this time from the villagers of Ananthagiri of Ellanthakunta mandal in Karimnagar district bordering Medak district.

The villagers have stood to their ground that they would not sign the consent forms to alienate their lands for construction of Ananthagiri Sagar reservoir, which is coming up as part of Kaleswaram lift irrigation project.

  • Villagers of Ananthagiri against alienating their lands
  • Justice Chandra Kumar and others condemn the hell-bent attitude of the govt

The villagers held their first public meeting on Saturday, to garner support for their agitation and to seek suggestions from political parties and people’s organisations. Chada Venkat Reddy, CPI state secretary, Chandra Kumar, retired high court Judge and Prof Surepalli Sujatha, along with leaders of other people’s organisations offered their support to the farmers’ agitation.

Addressing the gathering of villagers, Justice Chandra Kumar strongly opposed the construction of reservoirs in Medak and Karimnagar districts, as according to him, irrigation experts were against acquiring lands of the poor, when there were alternative methods to irrigate lands, as done by Jawaharlal Nehru Lift Irrigation Project in Haryana, where an extent of 3.5 lakh acres was irrigated without acquiring any lands from the farmers.

He questioned why the government was hell-bent on wasting Rs 20,000 crore, which could have otherwise been saved if the government had listened to the views and opinions of irrigation experts. “How many jobs can be created with Rs 20,000 crore? Who gave you the right to waste public money?” he questioned.

Prof Sujatha questioned who would bear the unaffordable cost of power needed for building such a huge lift irrigation project on a massive scale. “When you don’t have money to hold DSC when unemployment is driving youth into depression, where from can you afford Rs 85,000 crore for building this project?”

she asked the government. Chada Venkat Reddy pointed out the most recent judgment of the Lokayukta, where it says farmers’ lands needed to be acquired only through the implementation of the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act of 2013. He said that very soon a massive public meeting would be held involving organizations of farmers and farm labourers.

Yellaipally, Kochaguttapally, Chelkalapally and Allipur in Chinnakodur mandal of Medak district, apart from Ananthagiri; would be submerged under the reservoir which is proposed to come up with a storage capacity of 3.5 TMC.

In all, an extent of 2500 acres is being acquired for this project. Farmers from all villages, except Ananthagiri have given consent to alienate their lands for construction of the reservoir, in question.
