Nalgonda: Minister for Power G Jagadish Reddy said the government is not in a position to encourage cotton cultivation in the State considering the bitter experiences in the recent years.

He participated as the chief guest at the ZP general body meeting held at Nalgonda on Saturday. Choutuppal ZPTC Shiva Shankar asked the Minister to supply cotton seeds to the farmers at subsidy price.

Replying to him, Minister Jagadish Reddy explained that there is a ban on cotton export to other countries and several farmers committed suicide last year after incurring heavy losses in cotton cultivation. He advised the farmers to go for alternate crops to avoid losses this year.

Answering a question on division of districts, the Minister said a separate meeting would be convened soon to discuss the formation of new districts and mandals.

Stating that Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao will participate in Haritha Haram programme on July 8 or 9 in the district, he directed the officials to make necessary arrangements for planting saplings along the Vijayawada-Hyderabad national highway in the district, covering 150 kms.

Agriculture Department Joint Director Narsimha Rao explained about fertilisers and seeds stock in the district. DWMA Project Director K Damodar Reddy gave the details on the availability of saplings in the nurseries in the district.

ZP Chairman Balu Naik presided over the meeting and MP Gutha Sukendar Reddy, Miryalaguda MLA Bhasker Rao, Munugodu MLA Prabhakar Reddy, District Collector P Satyanarayana Reddy, ZP CEO Mahender Reddy and others participated in the meeting.
