The first list of seat allotment of JEE advanced 2016 is out. As always, IIT Bombay is the preferred choice of top rankers with more than 2/3rd of the top 100 choosing it. Among the new IITs, IIT Hyderabad is the preferred choice with 19 of the top 1000 choosing it, according to a report in Factly.in. In 2016, 67 out of the top 100 rankers were allotted to IIT Bombay followed by 28 to IIT Delhi and 5 to IIT Madras.

These are the only 3 IITs that have the top 100 rankers in 2016. In 2015, IIT Kanpur was also part of the top 100 list with 2 candidates choosing it. IITs in metro cities look like the preferred destination of toppers. IIT Hyderabad, Varanasi & Gandhinagar now have students from the top 500 ranks.

For the first time in 2016, a student among the top 500 has been allotted to IIT Hyderabad, IIT Gandhinagar and IIT (BHU) Varanasi. Till 2015, students among the top 500 chose one of the seven older IITs including IIT Roorkee.

In 2016, 2 students among the top 500 chose IIT Hyderabad and one each chose IIT Gandhinagar and IIT (BHU) Varanasi. IITs at Bombay and Delhi are still the preferred choice for the toppers with 164 and 131 students among the top 500 choosing them respectively. These are the only two IITs with more than 100 students from among the top 500 rankers.

The five old IITs are still the favourite among the top 1000 rankers. More than 25% (262) of the top 1000 in 2016 chose IIT Bombay followed by 196 for IIT Delhi. The IITs at Kanpur, Kharagpur & Madras also have more than 100 students from the top 1000.

Only four other IITs (Guwahati, Roorkee, Varanasi & Hyderabad) have double digit students from the top 1000. In all, a total of 14 IITs have a student from among the top 1000 in 2016. Among the new IITs, IIT Hyderabad is way ahead of the others as the preferred choice of toppers. In 2016, 19 students among the top 1000 chose IIT Hyderabad followed by 3 who chose IIT Indore.

The IITs at Gandhinagar, Jodhpur and Ropar have a student each from among the top 1000 for the first time in 2016. Even in 2015, IIT Hyderabad had 20 students from the top 1000. Three other new IITs that were established in 2008 at Bhubaneshwar, Mandi & Patna do not have any student from the top 1000.
