Hyderabad: The State government has taken a firm stand on sharing of Krishna waters with Telangana. Sources said that the government would stick to the existing utilisation and would not accept any dilution in its share in the forthcoming meeting on Krishna waters at Delhi, which is expected to take place on July 5.

The government at the highest level has been briefed that any dilution in the existing protected utilisation under various projects and sharing of waters of Krishna would hit the water requirements and hydroelectric energy generation of the State.

Speaking to The Hans India, a high ranking official from the Water Resources department said “Of the total 800 tmc ft of water allocated, 749.16 tmc ft has been earmarked against protected utilisation under various irrigation projects in the Krishna Delta System (KDS), 33 tmc ft for Srisailam and 17.84 tmc ft for Jurala Project had been earmarked as per the existing tribunal award. Any kind of tinkering with it would hit the existing protected areas of ayacut.”

It was against this backdrop that the State has been backing the Telangana demand for reallocation of Krishna water among all the Krishna Basin States (KBS), Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. But, at the same time, it is firm on the stand that the existing utilisation under various projects should be protected.

Taking the same line, the State is preparing its arguments to present before the Centre on sharing of Krishna waters for the current water year in the ensuing meeting at Delhi. Further, senior officials also see red over the TS’ arguments in sharing of waters from Polavaram and Pattiseema Lift Irrigation Project (PLIS).

“In case of sharing Godavari river waters, it wanted to stake the claim as an upper riparian State. But, when it comes to sharing of Krishna waters it is trying to stake it claim as a lower riparian State.

It can’t be both an upper riparian and lower riparian State at the same time,” the official said. And, this is that the State will place before the Centre.
