Hyderabad: Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K T Rama Rao on Monday appealed to women to plant at least five saplings each to set another record of sorts.

Speaking at an awareness programme of Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA) for Self-Help Groups (SHGs) at Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration (CDMA) office,

the Minister said the government wanted women to play an active role in the prestigious programme. He said the programme would be a great success if women participated voluntarily in large numbers.

The Minister instructed the officials of all urban local bodies to plant trees on their lands and protect them from encroachments. As a part of the special drive, 64 lakh saplings would be planted in all 72 municipalities in 806 acre which has been identified for the purpose. The Minister directed the CDMA Dana Kishore to appoint a special officer to monitor the green drive and take up geo-fencing and green-fencing to protect the saplings.

The Minister announced rewards of Rs 5 crore each to towns which stand first in the protection of greenery. The government has a target to plant 230 crore saplings out which 46 crore saplings are ready for this year.

On the occasion, the Minister praised the efforts of SHG women in achieving 13 Open Defecation Free (ODF) towns in the State and felicitated the presidents of Town Level Federations (TLFs).

MEPMA Additional Director L Vandan Kumar, along with the district project directors, mission coordinators, town mission coordinators and staff attended the programme.
