RELEASE OF LIFE TERM PRISONERS

New Delhi: The case against the release of prisoners undergoing life term in the Telugu States was adjourned for four weeks by the apex court here on Monday by the division bench headed by Chief Justice T S Thakur.

It may be recalled that the Y S Rajasekhar Reddy government issued an order releasing prisoners undergoing life term to commemorate 150th anniversary of the Sepoy Mutiny. The decision led to a huge political controversy as the list included the names of Gouru Venkat Reddy, Maddela Cheruvu Suryanarayana Reddy, etc.

The TDP leaders got into the act and got a petition filed against it through a lawyer Chandrasekhar Reddy in the Supreme Court. The petitioner contended that the terms of reference framed for the release was faulty and hence should be stayed. A bench comprising B N Agarwal and Justice B K Jail stayed the release of the prisoners.

However, in 2009, Justice K G Balakrishnan bench vacated the stay. When the case came up for final hearing here on Monday, the petitioner sought guidelines for such cases and sought proper definition of the life term. The bench then adjourned the case by four weeks.
